Comprehensive Screening and Biopsies

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, more than 53,000 people are newly diagnosed with oral cancer every year. For a majority of them, early diagnosis and treatment can have a significantly positive impact on their treatment outcomes and quality of life following their diagnosis. Oral pathology is the specific focus of detecting and diagnosing oral cancer, as well as other serious, chronic oral health diseases. To help improve every patient’s chances of early detection and treatment, we provide oral pathology examinations and services using advanced digital imaging and other oral health technologies.

Oral cancer screenings

Oral cancer can affect any region of your oral tissues and structures, and we thoroughly examine every one during your oral cancer screening. Some early signs may not be obvious at first, which is why we utilize advanced imaging to detect any signs that we might miss upon a visual inspection. During your screening, we’ll check for symptoms such as:

  • Discolored and/or rough patches of tissue
  • Red or white patches that don’t go away
  • Sensitivity or pain anywhere in your mouth or lips
  • Sores, ulcers, lumps, or lesions in any area of the mouth
  • And more

What is a biopsy?

These and other signs can be significant warnings of oral cancer, but their presence isn’t always the result of oral cancer. If we notice any signs of concern during your screening, we may suggest performing an oral biopsy. This involves surgically removing a small portion of oral tissue so that it can be examined more closely in a laboratory setting. The test will identify cellular abnormalities that may be more precise indicators of oral cancer, and can serve as the first step to successfully treating it.
